West End

This project explores the contrast between Vancouver’s West End and Coal Harbour, adjacent neighbourhoods with vastly different social dynamics. Coal Harbour’s sterile high-rises, designed for investors rather than residents, lack human-scale design and generate lifeless public spaces. In contrast, the West End’s aging, eclectic buildings foster a vibrant street life, where alleys and sidewalks become extensions of the home. These architectural differences shape social interaction: the West End’s layered, lived-in character enables community expression and resilience, while Coal Harbour’s uniformity suppresses individuality. To support and amplify this resistance to homogenization in the West End, we propose speculative, community-led street interventions, such as a movable wine bar, roller skating alley, and underground disco, that strengthen neighbourhood ties and celebrate everyday urban life.
