Built at my family’s home in Roberts Creek on the Sunshine Coast, this six-person sauna follows a traditional design. The interior features reclaimed cedar for its thermal efficiency, local availability, and aromatic quality. An electric rock-filled stove provides heat, with water ladled on for steam and aromatherapy. Nestled into the garden, the sauna is designed to blend into the landscape over time, with windows framing views of surrounding greenery. Recessed bench lighting and an exterior fixture support frequent nighttime use, an important part of my family’s routine. A cold plunge beside the sauna completes the hot-cold therapy cycle, encouraging relaxation and recovery. Benches are arranged on two levels to maximize the vertical heat gradient, offering both moderate and intense heat options.
